Happy Death Day Tops Domestic Box Office

(CelebrityAccess) — With a production budget of less than $5 million, Universal's slasher-horror entry "Happy Death Day" topped the domestic box office over the weekend after grossing more than 26 million on its debut.

Directed by Chris Landon and starring Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard, "Happy Death Day" was released in twelve territories worldwide, with a slim marketing budget, but still managed to scare up $31.5m worldwide, according to estimates compiled by comScore.

Warner Bros. "Blade Runner" slipped to second place in North America, posting a paltry $15.1m in domestic revenue and $44.4M across all markets over the weekend, pushing its cumulative estimated revenue above $150m, which just about pays for its reported production budget.

The Chinese-made comedy "Never Say Die" is proving to be a hit with fans in Asian markets and closed in on the $300 million mark over the weekend, an impressive feat for a comedy and even more impressive considering its currently playing in just five markets.
